Hypnotherapy: What Is It and How Can It Help?

Hypnotherapy is often misunderstood — thanks in part to stage shows and pop culture myths. But in reality, it’s a gentle, evidence-informed therapy that many people find helpful, especially when navigating anxiety, habits, or stress.

So, what exactly is hypnotherapy — and how can it support your wellbeing?

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy uses deep relaxation and focused attention to help shift unhelpful thoughts, behaviours, or emotional responses. It works with the subconscious mind — the part of you that holds onto patterns, beliefs, and emotional triggers.

You remain fully awake, aware, and in control throughout the process. It’s not about being “put under” or giving up control — it’s a guided state that feels calm, focused, and open.

How can hypnotherapy help?

Hypnotherapy can support a wide range of emotional and behavioural issues by helping you:

  • Break unhelpful patterns
  • Reframe anxious or intrusive thoughts
  • Let go of unwanted habits
  • Boost self-confidence and focus
  • Reduce stress and promote relaxation

It’s particularly useful when you feel stuck or overwhelmed by patterns you can’t quite shift through willpower alone.

What issues can it support?

In my practice, I often use hypnotherapy to support:

  • Anxiety and overthinking
  • Sleep problems
  • Confidence and low self-worth
  • Habit change (e.g. nail-biting, emotional eating)
  • Public speaking nerves or interview preparation

Is it right for you?

Hypnotherapy can be used on its own or alongside talking therapy. I tailor the approach to each person — you won’t be handed a script or made to “perform.” We work together, at your pace, with respect for your comfort and consent at all times.

If you’re looking for a more body-based, subconscious way to work with certain issues, hypnotherapy might be a good fit.
