What to Expect from Your First Therapy Session
Starting therapy can feel like a big step — and it’s completely normal to feel unsure, nervous, or even a bit awkward at first. Whether you’re new to therapy or returning after some time away, your first session is all about creating a safe, supportive space where you can begin to explore what’s on your mind.
It’s okay not to have the words yet
You don’t need to have everything figured out or know exactly what to say. Many people come to therapy unsure where to begin — and that’s absolutely okay. Part of our work together is gently exploring what’s going on, at your own pace.
What usually happens in a first session
Your first session is a chance for us to get to know each other. I’ll ask a few questions about what’s bringing you to therapy, what you’re hoping to get from it, and any relevant background you’d like to share. We’ll also talk about things like confidentiality, boundaries, and how the sessions will work — whether in-person in Norwich or online.
There’s no pressure to go deep straight away. This is your space, and you’re always in control of what you choose to share.
A calm, grounded approach
In my practice, I take a warm, down-to-earth approach that blends person-centred counselling with practical tools from CBT and hypnotherapy where appropriate. Whether you’re feeling anxious, low in confidence, or just overwhelmed by life, I aim to create a space where you can feel safe, seen, and supported.
Ready when you are
If you’re thinking about starting therapy but still have questions, you’re welcome to get in touch for a free 15-minute call. There’s no obligation — just a chance to chat and see if it feels like a good fit.
